Today buying a domain name has become a popular topic among new bloggers, because more and more people are looking for online businesses and online money making. There are tons of services on the web to buy domain name for internet users today. But before buying a domain name, selection of a better domain name plays a vital role. This post will be a guide to those people who are looking to buy a domain for their websites.
With the development of blogging as a home business, creation of blogs getting more and more popular. With the frequent upgrades of search engines, to have a top level domain in current blogging context has becoming increasingly essential. Most of the sub-domains are not given priority anymore by search engines due to increasing amount of spams coming through those sub-domains.
The following are the most recognized factors you should consider very carefully, before you spend your hard earned money to buy a top level domain ;
1. Your New domain name should be a Top Level Domain name
No need to say that your new domain should be a Top Level domain. Top level domain is a domain like www.yoursite.com. On the other hand sub-domain is a domain like www.yoursite.blogspot.com. I think you got the difference between Top level domain and a sub domain.
2. Buy domain name of .com, .net or .org
This is the next most important point on selecting a domain name for your blog. There are many type of domains you will see when you are searching for buying a domain name. As examples there are .co, .info, .me, .xxx, .mobi and etc… But those domains are not working as good as .com, .net and .org domains. The best domain name to buy is .com domains. They are famous and they can be easily memorized by the visitors. And also they are good for seo and search engine rankings.
3. Buy a short but descriptive domain name
Short domains are easy to remember. But just think you have selected a top level domain like this www.wmits.com, it is bit hard to remember even though it is short. That’s why I said it should be descriptive. If you can’t find a good short top level domain name to buy, select a domain name that make some sense to your readers. As an example www.watermarkitsolutions.com. I think you can remember this domain easily than the previous one which consists of just five letters.
4. Domain should be easily understood
when buying a domain you should select it for your readers. That simply means you need to select a domain which should be easily readable and easily understood by others. Then they will remember it easily
5. Don’t add any of the unnecessary characters in to your buying domain name
I have seen most of the webmasters are using hyphens inside their domain name when they couldn’t find the desired domain name due to availability matter. Never ever do this. Don’t add those hyphens or any other characters inside your domain name. A simple mistake done by your reader will do a chance for your competitor. They your customer will become a customer of your competitor.
6. Add your targeted keywords in to it before you buying a domain name
As we all know keywords play a vital role in search engine ranking and online money making. To make your targeted keywords effective just add them in to your domain too. This will be a most important determinant of your success or failure in online business. And it will be important in brand making too.
7. Buying expired domain work effectively on search engines
Buying a domain name which is expired work better than a buying a brand new domain name. That is because the age factor of the domain name plays an important role on search engines while ranking on them. The 5 months old domain ranked better than a 2 month old domain on a search engine. This may be due to the existing backlinks of that aged domain.
8. Domain name should be relevant to the content of the site
If you are maintaining a beauty culture website and if you used your domain as www.techblaster.net, it will be not appropriate. So it is important to select a domain which is closely related to your blog’s content. Then only people will remember your domain name.
9. Check for back links and Google PR if you are buying a expired domain name
If you are buying a domain name which is expired, it is better to check your domain for existing backlinks and Google Page Rank.
10. Use Trusted Service to buy domain name
Even though I have mentioned this as last point of this post, this is one of the most important point to remember. First check the how long they are in the domain selling business? Is it a registered company? Then check for their customer support. How long will they take to respond to your queries? Are they friendly and really taking your problems as serious. If you feel they don’t have good customer support, never ever buy a domain from that site. At the moment I am using Godaddy and Namecheap as my domain providers.
Well, those are the 10 most important factors you should consider while selecting a domain name for your website. Finally what I want to say is buy domain name from a trusted domain name provider. Otherwise all your hard effort will be destroyed by non experienced domain sellers.

very useful and effective post. I bought .com domain 1 month ago. i was experienced a lot with domain names. initially i used free domain .tk. but it was not upto my expectations so i decided to go for a paid domain and bought .com domain for my website. by knowingly or unknowingly i followed many of the points covered in this post. my website deals with programming. so i named my website as codershunt. so in order to make the visitors feel free to remember my domain i bought an easily remembering domain. I found my domain is satisfying all the points covered in the above post. finally i would like to thank you for this useful post. it helps a lot in registering a domain.
That is a good domain. It can be easily remembered. I looked in to your site too. But unfortunately I have to remove your link inside the comment body since we are not allowing to post any links inside the comment. We are using commentluv comment form. So you will get 2 do-follow backlinks automatically on each time you make a comment.
ok admin.
I know you are getting only one link, that is because some problem of your feed. Just correct it. Then you will get two links from commentluv comments.
Good luck.
Important post to all bloggers. I agree to all your points. But Most Wanted facts are #3 and #2. But others are important too. Your #7 point is smart one. Coz I didn’t notice it before. It’s easy for SEO when domain contains relevant keywords.
But I have a little question on this point. How .com domains do more with Search Engines? I don’t understand it.
Good Luck!

The point you mentioned is a very good one. Why [dot]com domains do more with search engines? I can write a new post on this topic. But I’ll explain it briefly here;
[dot]com domains are commercial domains and made to use world wide. But [dot]org domains are made for using on non profit organizations, even though currently they used them for commercial purposes. So [dot]com domains are coming over the [dot]org domains. Then [dot]info is considered as spamming domains most of the time and they are not given any priority by search engines. The other domain extensions are made up for regional uses. Only exception is [dot]net. So [dot]net also indexed in search engines as effectively as [dot]com domains. So buy a domain name with [dot]com or [dot]net allow you to do more with search engines.
I think you got my point, aren’t you?
Ya it’s brief explanation.. Did Google mention this thing anywhere or this just with your experience?
Anyway Thanks for replying..!

I got this from two sources, first by my experience and second by reading lot of articles on web. But I didn’t try to find a statement from Google. Anyway these points are very true fro regional domains.
the point no, 9 needs some more explanation..!
Only checking PR and Backlinks of old domain is not enough, we should also consider one the point like; was That particular Domain was ever penalized by Google for spamming, did the adsense account was ever blocked/penalized for that domain… and much more…
What i want to tell you is that, one should be very careful while buying Old Domain, some might have bad history behind it ( Penalized domain are always treated differently by the Search Engines)..

Anyway, thanks for the great information…

It’s good idea, i have 4 .com domain and one .info i got PR easily to 3 „domain.
Reall nice tips. If you failed to choose a perfect domain, you cant success
I have seen that the people do not giving too much important for selecting domain name. They considers it normal and select the domain name even Irrelevant to their content and not make the right use of the domain name
Yes, Most people do what you said. They just think a nice or handy domain name without thinking of the content of the site.
Is it really necessary to buy a top level domain for writing on blogging and internet topics? I can see usefulness on big business but to me buying a top level domain seems waste of time and money unless I am hoping to rank 1 on Alexa tomorrow.

I respect your opinion. But just buying a domain can’t bring your blog on to #1 in alexa. Just ask from other bloggers, most of them don’t like to deal with sub domains. Some people are not even commenting on sub domains. If you are an affiliate marketer it is good to have a top level domain rather than having a sub domain. Because we also not willing to go through a blog with a sub domain. The top level domain is part of the trust building process.
Most of folks use “-” and “Numbers” in a domain which is not good. I recommend this post to all those who are trapped in choosing a good domain name

Thanks for stopping, commenting and recommending this post to the blogging community.
The first 3 points are very important and must be followed. Now I don’t mean that one should neglect the other points, but the first 3 are relatively more important. The 7th point which you’ve mentioned here is an add-on and yet another useful point to be considered while choosing a domain name.
